Edizioni Piemme fue fundada en 1982, por iniciativa de Pietro Marietti, miembro de una familia cuya tradición editorial se remonta a 1820. La llegada, en 1999, de Elisabetta Dami, aportando su experiencia de 20 años con libros infantiles, ocasionó un período de considerable crecimiento para la empresa.
Edizioni Piemme inició sus actividades editoriales publicando libros religiosos, un área que se mantiene como una parte importante dentro su catálogo. Gradualmente, la empresa empezó a publicar ficción y no-ficción, así como libros infantiles, un sector en el que Piemme es uno de los líderes a nivel nacional.
