Urban High Heels

With this her first work, set in Barcelona, the Chilean writer Mariana Jara became a publishing success in Spain, and has been described as that country’s Carrie Bradshaw (‘Sex in the City’).

And little wonder, for her stories manage to capture the mood of our times. While it is true that we find it easier to strip off in front of a stranger, this does not mean that we have ceased our quest for happiness.

The daring tales gathered together in Tacones urbanos present us with a group of friends in their thirties, single, independent and with love and eroticism ever close to the surface.

Mar, the central character, usually meets up with her friends and the ever-present Toni at their favourite bar, the Dostrece. “I’m not made of stone”, Toni has to remind the group of young women as they recount details of their intimate meetings in the metro, the videoclub, the market and even at the hairdresser.

Fleeting glances, encumbering clothes, skin caressed and sensual aromas run through these pages portraying the ups and downs of relationships within couples in the speeded-up world we live in.
