Switzerland, 1873. What Sarah, a young woman from a good family, wants more than anything is to make a fresh start. On the spur of the moment, she decides to take up a position as a governess – but no sooner has she arrived in the aspiring ‘clock village’ of Grenchen, than events overtake her. When a maid dies in a mysterious accident, Sarah is curious to know why.

As she tries to find out more, she grows closer to Paul, her boss’s son, and with his help learns the art of clockmaking. She is fascinated by its intricacies, and yearns to become a clockmaker herself. Yet her dream puts her at odds with the conventions of her time …
