She Invented Freedom

How a little item of clothing changed the world – a gripping novel about the invention of the bra.

Dresden, 1908: It is the dawn of a new age, and a time of major new inventions. During their treatment sessions at the world-famous Lahmann Sanatorium health spa, therapist Christine’s patients – fine ladies in light corsets – keep fainting on her. Christine comes up with the brilliant, ground-breaking idea of replacing
corsets with a bra. The first prototypes, made from sewn-together handkerchiefs and braces, initially fail to find a clientele, who decide to stick to their corsets. But luckily there’s Julia, Lotta and Amalie, who cheer Christine on as she refines her invention. The four friends live in the same apartment building, and have a lot of fun trying on the bras and working out ways to improve them. The girls back Christine all the way – especially when charming Franz arrives at the spa…

Colourful, atmospheric, suspenseful and moving: four friends make their way in the world during the golden age of invention, confronting social pressures, love and their own spirit of invention.
