Lea is a twelve year old orphan who lives with her grandfather and a rather cynical, talking cat called Porfirio.
One night Lea sets out with the cat to discover the meaning of life. Why do people live? Why do they die? Why do they have pain? Why do growing up and loving make them suffer?
The two friends meet all kinds of people and find themselves in every kind of situations. They sleep in the countryside, under the trees, they study the sky and guess the meaning of birdsong. In the end they meet Death who explains the rules of the game: the variety and uniqueness of life and the reasons for the end of it.
