We Are Volcanoes

“We are volcanoes. When we women bring our experiences to bear as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change. New mountains rise. That’s what I want—I want to hear you erupt.
Ursula K. Le Guin

An ecological triumvirate is formed by the writer Rachel Carson (1907-1964), the researcher Lynn Margulis (1938-2011), and the philosopher Donna Haraway (born 1944), whose lives and work are the subject of this book. These eco-visionaries described how closely intertwined human and more-than-human life is on Earth and, early on, reconsidered nature and culture in new and different ways. Against much resistance, these three biologists transcended disciplinary boundaries, forged new connections between scientific research, philosophy, sociology, and evolutionary theory, and raised questions that are more important today than ever when it comes to survival in the future.

Author Charlotte Kerner (born 1950 in Speyer) has worked as a science journalist for publications including ZEIT, GEO, and EMMA. As an author, she has made a name for herself with biographies of female scientists and her international bestseller, the cloning novel *Blueprint*. She has received numerous awards, including the German Youth Literature Prize and the GEDOK Schleswig-Holstein Literature Prize.

THE PRESS:

A successful synthesis of the three life stories and research narratives… The author becomes the fourth member of the eco-triumvirate… For at the end of the book, Kerner hints, in the style of a science fiction novel, how humanity could survive despite climate change and species extinction and even find a better future. Even if this remains rather vague, it is quite enjoyable to follow the skilled writer on her genre-crossing adventure.”
Deutschlandfunk “Andruck”

Colorfully and fact-richly described biographies of the three eco-pioneering authors from different generations… No one who wants to understand the origins of an ecological transformation can ignore Rachel Carson & Sisters…
Sebastian Knauer CULTURMAG – Literature, Music & Positions

No human life without intact nature: The biologists Rachel Carson, Lynn Margulis, and Donna Haraway have impressively demonstrated how dependent we are on other living beings. The author Charlotte Kerner brings them into a fictional conversation. Very interestingly told…
Deutschlandfunk Kultur “Lesart”

A tactile experience in itself: A beautiful, slightly larger format, an interesting cover image, the book feels wonderful in the hand. With its spacious, generous layout and different fonts and sections, it invites the reader to pick up the book. The text about the three key thinkers… develops more and more radiance as the reading progresses.”
Antje Peters-Hirt, organizer and moderator of the small press fair “Die Buchmacher” (The Bookmakers), Lübeck:
