Carlin runs away from her mother, whose mental illness makes Carlin’s life very restricted. When she arrives at her grandmother’s house in Caladale, at last she feels free. There she meets Arran Mackay, who must be the most nerve-racking Scot in the whole county. He is confined to a wheelchair after an accident, and she can’t stand his indifference to everything and everyone, but she feels safe in his company. They hear that the estates around Caladale are to be sold, but Arran – whose father owns the land – doesn’t want to do anything to stop the sale. For the first time in her life, Carlin realises that it is worth fighting for what you love and for an unforgettable summer of blue wishes.
