How can one survive as a vampire in a family of vampire hunters?
At a Halloween party, Hester van Helsing doesn’t realize that she’s been bitten by a vampire and is gradually turning into a vampire herself. The ridiculous thing is that she comes from a family of vampire hunters, so she can’t tell any of them what’s happened to her!
And there’s another reason why this has made her life such a mess: she’s accidentally hypnotised her best friend Stella’s true love into having a crush on her, and so now he follows her around like a lovesick sausage dog. When Hester hears about a “sanatorium for disadvantaged children”, she thinks it might be a place for curing vampirism. She makes her way there. In the sanatorium she learns that vampires are not cured here but are regarded as enemies. “Normal” children are used to provide poisonous smoothies for vampires!
With the help of her best friend Stella and her hypnotised “vampire slave” Finn-Malte, Hester eventually discovers that in fact the director of the sanatorium is trying to find ways of getting vampires and humans to live together in peace. At the end of Volume 1, Hester is able to rescue the vampire children, tells Stella about her own transformation, and at least for the being accepts the fact that she is now a vampire.
