Raúl Quinto wins the Critics’ Prize 2024 in narrative for his novel “Martinete del rey sombra” (Jekyll&Jill)
In his novel, Quinto narrates the events that took place in 1749, when, under the reign of Fernando VI and by order of the Marquis of Ensenada, the mass arrest of the gypsy population took place in what has come to be described as a failed extermination project.
The novel “recreates this forgotten episode accompanied by the experiences of these Gypsies from the night of the arrest until the amnesty granted eighteen years later”. In this way, it reflects on how history and oblivion are constructed and breaks the limits of literary genres.
