With a degree in History from the University of Barcelona, Isabel Coixet began working in advertising, where she won several awards for her commercials. In 2000 she founded her own production company, Miss Wasabi Films.
Her debut as a director and screenwriter with Demasiado Viejo Para Morir Joven (1989), was nominated for Best New Director at the Goya Awards. In 1996 she made her first film in English, Things I Never Told You. Her international success came in 2003 with the intimate drama My Life Without Me. The Secret Life of Words (2005) was awarded four Goyas. La Librería (2017) won the Goya for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Her documentary Escuchando al Juez Garzón was awarded the Goya for Best Documentary.
For her film work she has been awarded the Medalla de las Bellas Artes by the Spanish Ministry of Culture (2009), Chevalier des arts et des lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (2016), Premio Nacional de Cinematografıa (2020) and International Award of the European Academy (2023).
