Carmen Martín Gaite (Salamanca, 1925–Madrid, 2000) was one of the great writers of contemporary Spanish literature. Author of works such as Entre visillos (Behind the Curtains, winner of the Nadal Prize in 1957), El cuarto de atrás (The Back Room, 1978) and Nubosidad variable (Variable Cloud, 1992), her voice was sensitive and intimate, but courageous, lucid, and deeply independent as well. This made her a unique writer who wrote both to understand herself and to converse with others, something she was passionate about and, like Miss Lunatic, something never tired of.
